George Thirkell is a Registered Practicing Structural Engineer Queensland (RPEQ 7279). He has over 12 years of experience. All design is in accordance with the Australian Building Codes and we carry Professional Indemnity Insurance
- What can we Engineer? – Houses, Offices, Retail premises, Industrial buildings and Tourist and recreational facilities.
Most of our work is designing the structural detail for houses in the Innisfail to Port Douglas, Kuranda and Yungaburra area. Many of our clients are other Cairns house designers, draftsman, architects, local builders and other Engineering firms as well as private work.
- Are you renovating? Do you need to know if you can take out a wall?
We can do a site inspection and investigate any structural implications your renovations may have. We can then design the appropriate solutions to allow your renovation to successfully comply with Australian Building Standards and Council requirements. The design can be drawn up on CAD with copies for you, builders and authorities should they be required.
- Are you a Designer? You’ll find our rates very reasonable for your client.
Supply us with your plans. You can email as a CAD or PDF file. The engineering components will be designed and then certified by us for your clients, builders and council.
- Are you a builder?
Supply us with your drawings and we can design all of the structural components, notate the drawings accordingly for ease of use and certify them for council approval.

- Making an insurance claim? Insurance professional and loss adjuster/ assessor?
We can do reports for claims assessment for the homeowner or the insurer including a ‘Scope of Works’ for repair of damaged buildings.
- Are you an Owner Builder?
If you’re subcontracting in trades, consider using our services to conduct regular compliance inspections. This is particularly important before you finalize any payments. You can arrange to pay us by the inspection and use our service as and when you need it.
- Do you have a very difficult block of land or a building problem?
Maybe you need to get advice from an Engineer before you set about designing your project to enable you to find a design solution for land with difficult topography. Arrange for a site inspection and some design advice from the engineering perspective before you get started. A structural engineer can often provide a very different solution to an architect or designer.
